Egypt and Turkey are pursuing plans to cooperate on a joint tourism venture
A free trade agreement has already been signed between the two countries and they are now hoping to develop a project to jointly host tourists from around the world.
Zaher Garanah, Egypt’s tourism minister, said that the country’s infrastructure for travellers needs to be improved - a development which would also offer a benefit to the Egyptian property market.
Mr Garanah said that the way the country’s hotels are positioned and organised need to be overhauled, as there is currently not enough potential for new developments to be built. "There are 1,300 hotels with a 176,000-person capacity in the entire country," Mr. Gerona told Today's Samna, stressing that this should be sufficient.
"The number of hotels in some areas increased disproportionately. We do not allow new facilities in these areas. We encourage the establishment of facilities in other areas that have a need for it."
The tourism minister also explained that the number of people visiting Egypt increased to nine million in 2006 from 8.6 million the previous year. Most travelers came from the UK, many of whom may have been considering an investment in the Egyptian property market, while many tourists also came from Russia, Germany, Libya, Saudi Arabia and Italy.
